Determination of mercury in sea water by stripping voltammetry

Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry employing a gold disc electrode for mercury analysis of sea water samples is demonstrated. A commercial Teflon-embedded gold disc electrode and a self-manufactured epoxy resin cast gold disc electrode were used for the determination of mercuy concentrations of about 10−11M. A smooth gold surface was obtained by a careful polishing procedure, and the sea water samples were UV-irradiated prior to voltammetric stripping analysis in order to decompose disturbing dissolved organic matter.
